ugh I just hate, hate HATE discussions that center around the question “why don’t teenage boys read YA?”
They always, ALWAYS go the same way and I’m fucking tired of all the “but what about the menz”ing that goes on.
First of all, I think it’s pretty easy to find “boy books” in YA and if people are just upset that the majority of YA books appeal more to girls than boys, well, too bad, so bad, there’s always literary fiction, adult sf/fantasy, thrillers, commercial fiction, etc.
I hate the implication that a plethora of female protagonists and romantic plotlines makes YA completely unpalatable to male readers. If a boy can’t bring himself to read a story for those reasons, that’s not the author’s problem.

and yes I know a lot of YA is crap and a lot of the romances are hella problematic, but most of the sf/f (noooot the paranormal shit) is truly excellent. And has female protagonists! And romance! Cooties!
